Desde Playadito alertan que faltará un 30% de yerba mate y que Argentina podría tener que importarla
Orlando Strauss es el vicepresidente de la cooperativa Liebig, productores de la yerba más vendida del país, Playadito.
Con casi 100 años de historia, la marca que fue fundada por una familia alemana hoy cuenta con 350 empleados y sufre las consecuencias de los incendios voraces de Corrientes, en donde se quemó más del 10% del territorio de toda la Provincia.
A pesar de haber aumentado en un 7% la producción de yerba por el mayor consumo durante la pandemia, hoy advierten que el año próximo habrá una caída del 30% y la yerba más elegida puede llegar a faltar en algunas góndolas.
Playadito conquistó el mercado en China, entra a Europa y a Estados Unidos. En esta entrevista para iProfesional, Strauss nos cuenta de lo dificultoso que es cambiar la mentalidad de aquellos que estigmatizan a los hombres de campo. «La planta empieza a dar yerba a los 5 años de haber sido plantada y recién a los 10 está en su capacidad máxima de producción, pero para el productor solo va el 37% del precio del paquete», advierte.
Preocupado por el problema social que dejan los incendios, cree que recuperar lo perdido con el fuego llevará al menos unos 5 años.
-¿Cómo nace Playadito?
-Estamos próximos a cumplir 100 años. Llegó con un grupo de inmigrantes de Alemania que vino a América buscando mejores horizontes, agobiados por las guerras y la hiperinflación. Este grupo se instala primero en Buenos Aires y luego en Colonia Livic, al noroeste de la provincia de Corrientes… suelos rojos, ellos no tenían ni idea de lo que era un suelo rojo característico.
Playadito hoy es la yerba mate más vendida en todo el país
En el 24 llegan a la Argentina y en el 26 fundan la cooperativa. Lo primero que hacen en ese momento es cultivo de subsistencias (maíz, porotos, arroz principalmente porque exportaban a Brasil), después vieron que en Misiones estaba el cultivo de yerba mate y que a los productores misioneros les iba un poco mejor porque era un cultivo perenne y no tenían que plantar todos los años. Es un árbol que resiste mejor a las plagas y a las sequías. De esta manera, se fueron adaptando y se hicieron productores de yerba mate. Así nació el secado y producción de la yerba.
Primero fuimos productores de materia prima hasta 1976 y en ese año empezamos a salir al mercado con nuestra marca Playadito. Empezamos primero como una yerba local, después pasó a ser provincial, regional, y así fue llegando a todas las góndolas. Hoy podemos decir que es una yerba nacional y algo internacional también.
-¿A dónde exportan?
-Hemos hecho un nicho importante y creo que el único en China y en el resto del mundo; son pequeños consumidores que llevan la costumbre de sus países de orígenes. Son latinos principalmente. Encontrás Playadito en las góndolas de Alemania, España, Barcelona, Irlanda, Estados Unidos, Chile.
-¿Y a los países limítrofes? ¿Brasil, Paraguay?
-No, Brasil tiene un hábito de consumo muy diferente al nuestro. Consume un producto que es totalmente verde, es un polvo verde al que llaman mate gaucho. Además, hacen un producto especial para Uruguay. Ellos ganaron el mercado uruguayo. Argentina no vende casi nada a Uruguay, pero sí estamos vendiendo muy bien a Chile.
-Entonces, ¿cuál es el orden entre los mercados que importan Playadito?
-A Chile es al país al que más le vendemos, después sigue China y posteriormente el resto del mundo.
Hoy venden tres millones cuatrocientos mil kilos mensuales
-¿Cuál es el nivel promedio anual de venta de Playadito?
-Estamos en tres millones cuatrocientos mil kilos mensuales.
-Y en pandemia, ¿se produjo más? ¿el consumo aumentó?
-Sí. En la pandemia se consumió bastante más y el mate individual ha dado un aporte importante al aumento del consumo. No es lo mismo compartir un mate entre diez o doce, que usarlo en forma individual. Quizá se achicó el tamaño del mate, pero aumentó la cantidad de veces que se toma mate. Esto hace que el consumo de yerba venga creciendo en el país. En el último año se registraron 7 puntos de crecimiento. Esto nos alienta a seguir produciendo. La ventaja es que se está consumiendo mucho, es un producto totalmente natural, es energizante, antioxidante, tiene muchas propiedades que realmente son muy saludables para el consumo.
-¿Y la exportación también aumentó con la pandemia?
-No. La exportación en el mundo se mantuvo, pero en el mercado interno crecimos 7 puntos.
-¿Ustedes no pagan retenciones por ser economía regional?
-No. Siempre fue variando. Tuvimos retenciones en un momento de 3 puntos, después 5 puntos, ahora en los últimos meses nos han quitado las retenciones a las exportaciones de las economías regionales, que eso fue un punto importante para las industrias del vino, la yerba, el maní. Es para que puedan ser competitivas a pesar de los altos costos internos que vienen soportando.
-Ahora contextualicemos esta actividad en una Corrientes golpeadísima por los incendios…
-Lamentablemente en la provincia de Corrientes se ha quemado el 10% de la superficie, es una barbaridad. Es algo que nunca nadie pudo imaginarse a esta altura, de la realidad que vivimos. Es increíble que una provincia pueda llegar a tal magnitud de desastre. No hubo medios para controlar, no hubo recursos, no hubo bunkers preparados, realmente es algo muy triste lo que nos pasó.

Se nos quemó gran parte de nuestra fauna y de nuestra flora. Reservas naturales, como la de Galarza. Reservas que estuvieron miles de años con humedad. La cantidad de animales muertos, y que sufrieron, no tiene precedente. Eso nos ha golpeado durísimo. Tenemos pérdidas impresionantes en montes, bosques que estaban listos para ser cosechados y se quemaron totalmente. Un daño económico inimaginable.
La yerba mate sufrió sobre todo por la sequía más que por el fuego. Se nos murió toda la plantación joven que tiene menos de diez años. Entonces, tenemos un problema a futuro impresionante porque plantar yerba mate te lleva un año en el vivero, lo sacás al campo y al tercer año recién hacés la primera prueba de información. Al quinto año entra en producción y, después del décimo año, recién está en plena producción, o sea que acá hay un golpe importante que no sabemos cómo lo vamos a sobrellevar. En esta zona, en el noreste correntino, y en el sur misionero, las pérdidas hoy están cerca del 60%. Y a nivel zona productora, estamos haciendo una estimación de que vamos a tener un 30% menos de la producción de este año comparado a la del año pasado.
-¿30% menos de yerba calculan?
-30% en toda la producción de yerba mate argentina.
-¿Se va a ver menos yerba en góndola? ¿Ya están stockeados para todo este año?
-El 2022 está cubierto para la producción. Para el hábito de consumo argentino y en los mercados donde vendemos, la tenemos que tener estacionada como mínimo de 9 meses a 12. Entonces, para toda la venta que se va a realizar en el 2022, tenemos yerba suficiente. El problema va a ser el 2023, ahí va a haber un faltante del 30%. Bueno, primero hay que ver cómo reaccionan las plantas y en segundo lugar hay alguna alternativa de importación de yerba de los países hermanos, que son los que producen Brasil y Paraguay. Son los únicos que pueden compensar este faltante con una importación de yerba.
-¿Importarían para vender la misma cantidad?
-No. Nosotros nunca hemos importado y no vamos a importar tampoco. Puede que tengamos algún faltante de nuestro producto porque realmente no vamos a poder lograr el blend al que nosotros tenemos acostumbrados a nuestros consumidores. Para nosotros es una preocupación muy importante y muy grande.
No vamos a cambiar el sabor de nuestra yerba y no vamos a engañar a nuestros consumidores con otro producto.
-¿Reciben ayuda del Gobierno suficiente?
-El ser productor en la Argentina es un tema bastante complejo, es mucho riesgo. Nosotros decimos que ser productor acá es producir con un laboratorio a cielo abierto. Realmente estás expuesto a cualquier factor climático, cualquier desastre, tenés que sembrar, tenés que esperar que crezca, te tiene que llover, después cuando lo tenés a punto, lo tenés que cosechar, en ese momento no te tiene que venir ninguna plaga… es una actividad de altísimo riesgo y eso no se mide, lamentablemente, en la Argentina.
A Chile es al país que más le venden
El productor siempre ha encontrado la vuelta de sobrevivir. Pero realmente la ayuda en el país es muy pequeña. Imagínate que no tenemos un seguro agrícola. En primer lugar, tendríamos que tener uno, como tienen todos los países organizados, entonces estás expuesto a la buena de Dios. Te va mal y te lleva cinco o seis años recuperarte; algunos desaparecen del mercado, es muy triste. Cada vez vamos siendo menos productores, y la producción se va concentrando en productos más grandes que realmente tienen capitales de otros lados para poder sobrellevar esta situación.
-¿Por qué cree que no reciben más ayuda del Gobierno?
-Primero, los productores tenemos que hacer mea culpa. Nosotros no sabemos organizarnos y no sabemos vender nuestra producción; es decir, no sabemos defender nuestra producción como otros gremios defienden a su gente: camioneros, docentes, telefónicas. Nos falta aprender, pero estamos trabajando. Es triste porque somos los que ponemos todos los productos en la mesa de los argentinos y a veces no conocen o no entienden el esfuerzo que hay para poder llegar. Se nos tilda de «oligarcas», de «terratenientes», y eso no existe. Son todos pequeños productores.
Los pequeños productores son los que han levantado a la Argentina y hoy no se lo protege y no se lo cuida. Esta parte de la Argentina es la que genera trabajo, genera mano de obra, invierte, reinvierte. El productor es el primero al que si le sobraron $2 cambia su tractor, su máquina, hace alambrado, invierte en toda la compra, agrega un ladrillo más en su casa, genera mano de obra. Entonces es realmente triste la situación del productor. Tenemos responsabilidad, porque por ahí no sabemos organizarnos y defendernos. En otros países el sector agropecuario está muy bien organizado, tiene aportes propios y recursos. Yo creo que eso es lo que nos falta a nosotros, y nos falta un seguro, nosotros tenemos que pelear por un seguro agrícola.
-¿Mantienen conversación permanente con el ministro Domínguez?
-Sí, se tienen reuniones. No solo con este gobierno, con anteriores también se han hecho muchos intentos, pero lamentablemente no hemos llegado a buen puerto.
-¿Cuánta gente tienen trabajando en lo que es producción?
-Empleados directos de Playadito hoy son 350 más los 126 socios, y cada socio tiene a sus empleados en forma individual para levantar la producción, porque la cooperativa Liebig lo que hace es el procesamiento desde la hoja verde que llega al secadero, el productor lo pone ahí y la cooperativa hace todo el proceso de secado, estacionado, molienda, envasado. La cooperativa tiene 350 empleados y después tenemos otro tanto de empleados en forma individual de cada socio.
-Aproximadamente, ¿cuánto le queda al productor yerbatero de cuando arranca? Teniendo en cuenta que es el que tiene que estar unos cinco años de cuidado de planta para que empiece a rendir…
La incidencia del productor de la yerba mate en el paquete es del 37%. Con eso se arregla el productor, el resto después es para la industria, tenemos otro tanto de impuestos y el resto es comercialización y marketing, pero el 37% es la incidencia del producto que va adentro del paquete.
Los incendios en Corrientes es una de sus mayores preocupaciones
-Queda muy poco para el productor en función del trabajo, ¿no?
-Es poco, para el trabajo y para lo que arriesga el productor.
-Y de impuestos, ¿qué porcentaje hace al precio de la yerba?
Tenemos alrededor del 30%, provinciales y nacionales. El socio mayoritario siempre, en toda la producción agropecuaria, es el Estado.
-¿El resto es marketing?
-En el resto tenés en comercialización y marketing.
-Por un lado, con la pandemia imagino que, al aumentar la producción, tal vez pudieron tomar más empleados… Ahora, con los incendios en Corrientes, ¿temen que tengan que, al achicarse la producción por la pérdida de suelo, despedir gente?
-Mirá, ese es el punto más triste que nos toca hoy. Es el problema social, el que hoy se está empezando a ver en muchas empresas de servicio. Se está reduciendo el trabajo, falta empleo en todas las economías regionales de la provincia de Corrientes. Va a haber un problema social gravísimo: eso es lo que más nos preocupa porque, dentro de todo, en la actividad yerbatera se podía sostener bien el equilibrio. El productor podía tener empleados en regla, podía pagar un salario digno, ahora se nos cambia totalmente el panorama. Veníamos invirtiendo, plantando, aplicando mucha tecnología, pero la sequía y el tiempo nos ha pasado una mala jugada y tuvimos que adaptarnos a esto y ver cómo salimos de esta situación.
-¿El Estado los ayuda?
-Nosotros pedimos ayuda a Dios y a medio mundo, a todos lados, tanto organismos provinciales como nacionales.
-¿Y alguien responde?
-Sí. Al menos se postergó la interzafra (Plan impulsado por el Gobierno para que el trabajador llegue al salario mínimo, vital y móvil, complementando la cifra que paga el empleador con la cifra que da la provincia y con una Tarjeta Alimentaria). Acá los obreros que en dos meses no trabajan, con el interzafra tienen un subsidio, entonces eso se ha prorrogado 2 ó 3 meses más. Vamos a ir observando cómo va hasta ver qué es lo que se puede rescatar de la producción para poder volver a insertar esa mano de obra.
-¿Cuánto tiempo creen que va a llevar recuperar y volver a la producción previa a los incendios?
-Si el año que viene es un año normal y tenemos nuestro régimen de lluvias, que son 1800, 1900 ml anuales, y con una humedad relativa del 50, 60% hacia arriba, nos llevaría volver a reponer nuestra unidad de producción unos cinco años. Pero es muy relativo, porque hay dos factores que no podemos manejar, que son el régimen pluviométrico y la humedad relativa.
Este año se dio algo inédito: tuvimos una brutal sequía de 4 meses y un calor que era como un horno andante, temperaturas de 44 grados, y dentro de los yerbales debe haber llegado a los 50 porque realmente no hay circulación de aire. Es una masa de árboles en la que las temperaturas suben y eso ha hecho muchísimo daño en las plantaciones.
