SIENA, Italia – La fotografía premiada -de un hombre que había perdido una pierna en un atentado en Siria, levantando en el aire a su hijo, nacido sin extremidades, otra víctima de la guerra civil del país- se hizo viral el año pasado en Italia.
El viernes, Munzir El Nezzel, el hombre de la foto, y su hijo Mustafá llegaron a Italia tras un notable esfuerzo de los organizadores del Premio Internacional de Fotografía de Siena, para traerlos a ellos y a su familia desde Turquía, adonde habían huido después de Siria.
“Estamos llegando, gracias”, dijo Mustafá, de 6 años, sonriendo ampliamente, en un mensaje de vídeo grabado antes de que él y su familia -padre, madre y sus dos hermanas de 1 y 4 años- subieran a un avión en Ankara el jueves para volar a Italia. “Nos encanta Italia”, añadió.
La foto de Mustafá y su padre, ambos con sonrisas cariñosas, que fue tomada en enero de 2021 por el fotógrafo turco Mehmet Aslan, y que se titula “Dificultades de la vida”, fue declarada foto del año en los premios Siena del año pasado.
La emotiva e impactante foto fue noticia en Italia y se difundió internacionalmente en las redes sociales, lo que impulsó a los organizadores del festival a tomar medidas e iniciar una campaña de recaudación de fondos para conseguir tratamiento para padre e hijo.
Los organizadores del festival se pusieron en contacto con diplomáticos, hospitales, centros de rehabilitación y la diócesis católica de Siena para acoger a la familia siria, de modo que Mustafá y su padre pudieran recibir tratamiento y prótesis.
“La imagen iba más allá de lo imaginable”, dijo Luca Venturi, un ingeniero que fundó el festival de fotografía de Siena, que otorgó el premio, hace unos seis años. “Pensamos que también podíamos ir más allá de nuestro miedo a no poder hacer nada por esta familia”.
Como todos los países, Italia puede expedir visados por razones humanitarias, pero los refugiados deben ser patrocinados por una organización local que se encargue de los trámites y proporcione ayuda económica.
Motivada por el éxito del esfuerzo de crowdfunding, la organización sin ánimo de lucro que organiza el festival de fotografía decidió patrocinar a la familia siria.
“Era un gran sueño para todos”, dijo Venturi.

Nezzel respondió con signos de exclamación.
Cuando la familia recibió este mes la noticia de que sus visados habían sido concedidos, “estaban incrédulos”, dijo Venturi, añadiendo que en un video, Mustafa daba volteretas y se reía, gritándole “te quiero”.
Mustafá nació con un trastorno congénito derivado de la medicación que su madre tuvo que tomar durante el embarazo, después de que enfermara por el gas nervioso liberado durante la guerra de Siria. Necesitará un tratamiento a largo plazo para poder caminar o vivir de forma más independiente. Actualmente, sus padres lo llevan en brazos y una de sus dos hermanas también le ayuda en casa.
Expertos en prótesis de Italia se reunirán con Mustafa y su padre en las próximas semanas para diseñar nuevos miembros artificiales. Es probable que el tratamiento de El Nezzel sea más fácil porque es un adulto. Trabajar con un niño de 6 años será más difícil, según los médicos e ingenieros del principal centro de rehabilitación y prótesis de Italia.
