Un auto se abalanzó hoy contra una multitud que participaba de un carnaval en una localidad del sur de Bélgica y mató a seis personas, informaron autoridades, que dijeron que fue un accidente y no un ataque.
El hecho ocurrió en la localidad de Strépy-Bracquegnies, unos 40 kilómetros al sur de Bruselas y cerca de la frontera con Francia, donde unas 70 personas estaban por iniciar un desfile de carnaval que se había suspendido los dos últimos años por el coronavirus.
«Un desastre se ha producido en el marco de la organización del carnaval. El primer carnaval posconfinamiento. Catástrofe en relación al número de víctimas”, dijo el alcalde de La Louvière, el municipio que abarca la localidad donde sucedió el atropellamiento.
De repente, “un auto vino por detrás a gran velocidad y embistió a gran cantidad de personas. El costo es muy alto a nivel humano”, dijo el alcalde, Jacques Gobert, en conferencia de prensa.
Las circunstancias del hecho quedaron bajo investigación, pero se ha descartado la posibilidad de que haya sido un atentado, dijo la policía.
«Es un accidente, un accidente trágico. El auto atropelló a un grupo de personas e intentó proseguir, pero fue frenado por la policía», dijo la vocera policial Cristina Ianoco.
«El conductor y otras personas que iban en el auto fueron detenidas», agregó, informó la agencia de noticias Europa Press.
En la conferencia de prensa junto al alcalde Gobert, un médico del equipo de emergencias dijo que seis personas murieron y otras 37 resultaron heridas.
“Tenemos 10 víctimas en estado grave y otras 27 heridas más leves. Todos fueron evacuados a diferentes hospitales», dijo el médico.
Testigos afirmaron que el vehículo surgió «de la nada” en medio de la celebración.
El primer ministro de Bélgica, Alexander De Croo, lamentó la tragedia.
«Horribles noticias desde Strépy-Bracquegnies. Una comunidad que se reunió para celebrar fue golpeada en el corazón. Mi corazón está con las víctimas y sus seres queridos. Todo mi apoyo va también para los servicios de emergencia por su ayuda y asistencia brindada», dijo en un comunicado.
La ministra del Interior belga, Annelies Verlinden, entregó sus condolencias a los amigos y familiares de los fallecidos.
«Lo que era una gran fiesta se convirtió en un drama», escribió en Twitter.
Verlinden dijo que estaba en contacto con las autoridades locales, y que el caso ya está en manos de la fiscalía belga.
La policía no identificó a los detenidos.
Sin embargo, medios locales, citando fuentes policiales o de la fiscalía, dijeron que tienen 32 y 34 años de edad, son naturales del municipio y, en principio, no parecen tener antecedentes.
