El 2022 tenía un sabor especial para los futboleros. Con la invasión de Rusia a Ucrania y la posibilidad inminente de un conflicto bélico de escala mundial, Qatar 2022 ha pasado a un segundo plano.
Al igual que otras competencias del mundo deportivo, el Mundial de Qatar tiene muchos aspectos en los cuales este conflicto entre Rusia y Ucrania se ve directamente implicado, pero el principal es el futbolístico. Tanto la selección rusa como la ucraniana tienen que disputar el repechaje de la UEFA por los últimos tres boletos europeos para el Mundial: los ucranianos visitarían a Escocia por la llave A y los rusos recibirán a Polonia por la llave B. Ambos llaves, pautadas para el 24 de marzo a partido único. Casi como un guiño del destino, estos equipos no se enfrentarán en la primera instancia del repechaje y tampoco lo harán en la segunda. Pero Polonia ya puso el grito en el cielo y le pidió a la UEFA cambiar la localía para no ir a suelo ruso en medio de la guerra.
En el caso de que la guerra escale a nivel continental o mundial, los antecedentes históricos no juegan a favor de la FIFA. Cuando se celebró el Mundial de Francia 1938, nadie pensó que sería el último hasta 1950. En 1939, el ejército nazi hizo estallar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el único evento en la historia que evitó que se disputara la Copa del Mundo. Ante el conflicto bélico más grande de la historia, la FIFA no pudo organizar los Mundiales de 1942 y 1946 y retomaría la actividad mundialista recién en Brasil 1950.
Luego de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la FIFA ha organizado la Copa del Mundo de forma ininterrumpida. Durante estos Mundiales, varios partidos estuvieron atravesados por guerras o conflictos políticos. Lógicamente, el partido con injerencia bélica más recordado es el Argentina-Inglaterra de México ‘86, pero hubo otros: en la Copa del Mundo de 1974, Alemania Federal, organizadora del evento, se enfrentó a la “otra” Alemania, la Democrática, cuando faltaban muchísimos años para que se derrumbara el Muro de Berlín. Otro ejemplo fue el encuentro en fase de grupos de Francia ‘98 entre Estados Unidos e Irán, países con un enfrentamiento político de muchísimos años.
Por otra parte, uno de los grandes acontecimientos bélicos de los últimos años fue la Guerra de los Balcanes, en la que muchos países se separaron de la antigua Yugoslavia. Este conflicto, que se disparó en 1992, evitó la participación de la selección yugoslava en la Eurocopa 1992 pero no frenó al Mundial de Estados Unidos 1994. Francia 1998 significó el regreso de Yugoslavia a una cita mundialista y la primera participación de Croacia como país independiente, pero no llegaron a enfrentarse.
