La repatriación de los restos de Rosas, que creó su propia “pampa” en el exilio y tomaba mate con los ingleses
Vivió al día y se alimentaba de lo que producía en los 140 acres de la granja que alquilaba en Swanthling, a unos kilómetros de Southampton, sobre el camino a Londres. Se negaba o directamente ignoraba las invitaciones a recepciones porque no tenía qué ponerse. Había quedado en el pasado las visitas que intercambiaba con su amigo Lord Palmerston, que ya había fallecido.
Había dejado la casa que ocupaba en la ciudad en 1862 y esa granja se transformó en su residencia definitiva, donde moriría a las siete de la mañana del miércoles 14 de marzo de 1877, dos semanas antes de cumplir 84 años.
Juan Manuel de Rosas había caído en cama por un enfriamiento que tomó, porque hasta último momento trabajó en el campo, a pesar de su edad y de sus achaques, entre ellos sus problemas de gota. A las ocho de la mañana comenzaba su jornada de trabajo que interrumpía una hora al mediodía para almorzar. Luego seguía hasta las cinco de la tarde, tiempo en que se ponía a escribir, preferentemente a lápiz. Tenía varios con la punta preparada, para no perder tiempo.
En Argentina le habían confiscado sus propiedades, la legislatura lo declaró en 1857 “reo de lesa patria”, no tenía contacto con su familia ni con su hermano Prudencio, que vivía holgadamente en un palacete en Sevilla. Se animó a escribirle a Justo José de Urquiza por su situación, y éste lo ayudó económicamente. Lo seguiría haciendo su viuda, cuando el entrerriano fue asesinado en 1870.

En el dormitorio de su granja guardaba, en armarios, papeles, documentos y libros, que había logrado rescatar cuando dejó Buenos Aires. Decía que los ayudarían a defenderse de las acusaciones de sus enemigos.
Rosas siempre fue personaje algo pintoresco para los lugareños. Lo recordaban montado a caballo y con esa extraña costumbre de tomar mate, hábito que logró imponer entre los ingleses del lugar. El idioma, que había empezado a estudiarlo junto a su hija Manuelita en el barco que lo llevó a Gran Bretaña y que siguió con lecciones en Southampton, lo hablaba mal pero lo hacía de corrido.
Lo que primero fue un enfriamiento, el sábado 10 de marzo se había transformado en neumonía. Lo atendió su vecino y amigo, el doctor John Wiblin.
Manuelita lo acompañó a Gran Bretaña. El mismo año que se instalaron ella se casó y él nunca se lo perdonó.
Su hija Manuelita, que vivía en Londres, y que solía visitarlo dos veces al año junto a su marido Máximo Terrero y sus hijos Rodrigo Tomás y Manuel Máximo, recorrió los 120 kilómetros y llegó el lunes.
Tenía otro hijo, Juan Bautista, que lo había acompañado junto a su familia en su exilio. Había regresado a Buenos Aires en 1855, y no había ido a despedirlo.
Rosas tomó como una traición el hecho de que su hija haya decidido casarse. No asistió a la boda y en cartas a allegados se lamentaba que “me ha dejado abandonado”.
El 30 de septiembre de 1989 sus restos llegaron a Rosario. Hubo una misa y un acto en el Monumento a la Bandera; luego el féretro fue llevado por el río Paraná a Buenos Aires, previa parada de honor en la Vuelta de Obligado.
El anciano volaba de fiebre y se conmovía con los accesos de tos. Si bien el martes había mejorado, en las primeras horas del miércoles 14 de marzo su hija, que dormitaba junto a su cama, lo besó como acostumbraba, y al hacerlo en la mano la notó muy fría.
“¿Cómo se siente, tatita?”.- Preguntó.
“No sé, m’ hija”. Fueron sus últimas palabras.
El lunes siguiente fueron los funerales en el cementerio local. El 24 el Southampton Times & Hampshire Express publicó una breve necrológica, que informaba que “su excelencia” el general Juan Manuel de Rosas había muerto de inflamación a los pulmones.
El féretro de roble inglés macizo y lustre francés, cubierto por un paño negro que tenía una cruz blanca, fue acompañado por dos coches fúnebres. Fue una ceremonia corta, de la que participaron unos pocos allegados. Se cumplió su deseo, de que en su despedida al más allá solo se rezase una misa.

Muy lejos, en Buenos Aires, al llegar la noticia, viejos federales salieron a manifestar, lo que dio lugar a que otros viejos unitarios, que habían sufrido la persecución y el exilio, hicieran lo mismo y tuvieran como blanco el sepulcro de Juan Facundo Quiroga en La Recoleta, donde intentaron enlazar por el cuello a la Dolorosa, la escultura que coronaba el sepulcro. El gobierno prohibió a los familiares de Rosas rezar una misa en su memoria.
El 3 de febrero de 1899 su caserón de Palermo fue dinamitado y el extenso parque que lo rodeaba pasó a llamarse, a partir de la presidencia de Domingo F. Sarmiento, Tres de Febrero, que recordaba la batalla de Caseros. El 25 de mayo de 1900 un busto del ex presidente fue colocado en el centro de lo que había sido la residencia del ex gobernador de Buenos Aires.
Desde entonces, hubo varios intentos y proyectos de repatriar sus restos. El 30 de octubre de 1973 la misma legislatura que lo había condenado retiró los cargos, hubo un proyecto en el tercer gobierno de Juan D. Perón que su muerte frustró, y en el comienzo del gobierno de Carlos Menem se concretó.
El 21 de septiembre de 1989, a las tres de la tarde, se realizó la exhumación. Trámites que la burocracia inglesa prolonga por semanas, lo abrevió a solo una. Presenciaron el desentierro su tataranieto Martín Silva Garretón y Manuel de Anchorena. El féretro estaba en un nicho de mampostería, debajo de los de su hija Manuelita y su yerno Máximo Terrero. Al estar debajo de todo el trabajo demoró horas y se usó una pala mecánica para excavar. Tenía la tapa deteriorada. La inexperta manipulación había provocado la destrucción de algunos huesos. Los restos se pasaron a otro ataúd y fueron llevados a la funeraria Mallum.
El viernes 22 por la tarde el Boeing 707 de la Fuerza Aérea que llevaba los despojos aterrizó en el aeropuerto francés de Orly, en el sector reservado a los jefes de Estado. Habían colocado una alfombra roja y banderas argentinas y francesas a media asta. El féretro de madera clara, que contenía a otro estaba cubierto por dos banderas, la azul y blanca federal y la celeste y blanca, la misma que hasta el 2 de abril de 1982 había flameado en la entrada de la embajada argentina en Londres. Acompañaban los restos miembros de la Comisión Nacional de Repatriación, con Julio Mera Figueroa a la cabeza. Un grupo de gremialistas que se encontraba en Europa depositaron un poncho punzó sobre el ataúd.

El 27 de septiembre se abrió el féretro ante la presencia de sus descendientes. Los huesos, desarticulados, eran de color castaño y muchos estaban casi destruidos. El cráneo estaba volcado hacia la derecha y la mandíbula aún aprisionaba una dentadura postiza. Era todo lo que quedaba del que durante un cuarto de siglo había manejado con gobernado con mano de hierro la Confederación Argentina. Se hallaron además un crucifijo de madera y un plato de porcelana, que podría haber sido usado para colocar agua bendita durante el velatorio.
De Francia, el vuelo hizo escala en las islas Canarias y en Recife. El 30 de septiembre por la mañana llegó a Rosario, donde se hizo un acto en el Monumento a la Bandera, con misa y con la presencia de descendientes directos. Allí Carlos Menem pronunció su primer discurso como presidente e hizo una apelación a la unidad nacional. “Al darle la bienvenida al Brigadier General don Juan Manuel de Rosas también estamos despidiendo a un país viejo, malgastado, anacrónico, absurdo (…) En la unidad nacional nadie está obligado a renunciar a sus ideas ni a su juicio histórico; en la unidad nacional nadie está obligado a claudicar en sus opiniones sobre nuestro pasado”.
En el buque de la Armada Murature fue llevado por el Paraná hacia Buenos Aires. Una parada de rigor fue en la Vuelta de Obligado, con salvas y homenaje.

El 1 de octubre llegó al puerto de Buenos Aires y un multitudinario cortejo de jinetes vestidos a la usanza federal incluidos, acompañó el féretro a su destino final, la bóveda de los Ortiz de Rozas en el cementerio de La Recoleta.
No se cumplió la premonición de José Mármol de que “ni el polvo de sus huesos esta tierra tendrá”. En noviembre de ese año se inauguró un monumento con su figura que mira fijo al busto de Sarmiento, acérrimo opositor. Y el billete de veinte pesos llevó el rostro de ese anciano un tanto ermitaño que hablaba mal el inglés y que había convertido su granja en un rincón de la pampa argentina.
