Tal es el caso de Reece Thompson quien interpretó al “niño irlandés” en el filme dirigido por James Cameron y todos los meses recibe un pago por ese trabajo. Thompson tenía nueve años cuando participó de la filmación, y su personaje era un niño que viajaba en tercera clase junto a su mamá y hermana y que muere en el célebre naufragio.
Reece nació en Canadá y hoy tiene 33 años, y le dio una entrevista a la publicación Business Insider y le reveló cuánto dinero gana cada mes en la actualidad por aquel trabajo.
Aunque su aparición se reduce a tres escenas y apenas pronuncia una sola línea en el momento en que estalla el caos fatal en el transatlántico, contó además que sigue relacionado con los productores de la película que en Estados Unidos se estrenó a mediados de diciembre de 1997.
En tanto, hoy Thompson se desempeña como director de marketing digital de una estación de esquí y snowboard en el estado de Utah. Además, contó que su carrera comenzó como modelo infantil luego de haber firmar contrato con un agente de talentos al ganar un concurso.
A partir de este hecho, Reece y su madre se enfrentaron a una encrucijada: les dieron a elegir entre protagonizar un anuncio publicitario o tomar un pequeño papel en Titanic. Si bien desde lo monetario la primera opción parecía más tentadora, terminaron optando por la que, a largo plazo, resultaría la más ventajosa.
“Fue una de las películas más taquilleras de la historia, por lo que es bastante extraño verlo en retrospectiva”, sostuvo Thompson. “Mi mamá dijo: ‘Hagámoslo. Será genial. Incluso si la película es mala, la veremos’”, recordó. Al rodarse la película, Reece cobró un pago de 25 mil dólares y el dinero fue depositado en una cuenta bancaria con el objetivo de destinarlo a su educación, pero también para adquirir un automóvil.
En la entrevista, el joven contó que en los años posteriores al estreno de la película de Jackson recibió cheques por varios miles de dólares cada trimestre. Pero que, a medida en que fue pasando el tiempo, esa cifra comenzó a reducirse a 100 y 300 dólares mensuales.
“Es curioso, porque este hecho ya no está presente en mi mente. No es que todo el tiempo estoy pensando: ‘Oh, ¿cuándo voy a recibir un nuevo cheque del Titanic? Pero, cuando sucede, es como decir: ‘Genial, 100 dólares extra’”, dijo Reece.
“Hubo un par de veces en las que dije: ‘Esta película tiene 25 años y eso es bastante extraño, pero espero que siga ganando mucho, porque eso significa más dinero para mí”, reflexionó en un tono humorístico.
Lo cierto, es que el éxito de James Cameron recaudó más de miles de millones de dólares en todo el mundo desde su estreno y, luego de 13 años en el podio, es actualmente la tercera película más taquillera de la historia tras ser apenas superada por Avatar (2009) (mismo director) y Avengers: Endgame (2019).
