La violenta erupción de un volcán submarino provocó un tsunami en Tonga
El fenómeno estuvo cercano a los 1,2 metros provocado por una nueva erupción del volcán Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai. La erupción duró ocho minutos.
Los habitantes de las islas Tonga, Pacífico Sur, huían este sábado hacia las las zonas altas ante el tsunami provocado por una nueva erupción del volcán Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai, que fue escuchada a cientos de kilómetros.
«Se observó un tsunami de 1,20 metros en Nuku’alofa, la capital del pequeño archipiélago del océano Pacífico», anunció la oficina australiana de meteorología.
El rey de los tongas Tupou VI fue evacuado del palacio real de Nuku’alofa y llevado a una villa alejada de la costa.
La erupción duró ocho minutos, y fue tan fuerte que se escuchó «como un trueno lejano» en las islas Fiji, a más de 800 km de distancia, dijeron funcionarios de Fiji.
También advirtieron a los residentes que cubrieran las reservas de agua para protegerlas de la lluvia o las cenizas ácidas.
Victorina Kioa, de la comisión de servicios públicos de Tonga, pidió a la población que «se aleje de todos los lugares amenazados, es decir, las playas, los arrecifes y todas las costas planas».
Por otra parte, la Oficina Nacional de Emergencia (Onemi) de Chile alertó este sábado sobre la posibilidad de que llegue a la Isla de Pascua un «tsunami menor» tras el provocado por la erupción de un volcán en Tonga.
«¡Recuerda! que por Estado de Precaución para el Archipiélago Juan Fernández, islas San Félix, de Pascua y Antártica Chilena por erupción volcán en Tonga, se solicita abandonar zona de playa frente a la posibilidad de un tsunami menor en dichos sectores», señaló la Onemi a través de las redes sociales.
«Por precaución ABANDONE ZONA DE PLAYA, por tsunami menor, en Isla de Pascua», fue el mensaje de emergencia que llegó a todos los habitantes de la isla, ubicada a 3.300 km al oeste de la costa chilena, en medio del océano Pacífico.
En tanto, la Red Geocientífica de Chile destacó que el tsunami que llegaría a la isla polinesia alcanzaría los 30 centímetros como máximo.
