Cinco dólares diarios comenzarán a cobrar las autoridades del condado de Volusia, en el estado de Florida, a las personas que tengan que cumplir condena o esperen juicio en la prisión.
La medida entrará en vigencia desde el próximo otoño para compensar los gastos de manutención de los detenidos.
«Les estamos dando de comer todos los días. Los estamos cuidando todos los días», justificó Mark Flowers, director del Departamento Correccional de Volusia.
En ese sentido, el Consejo del Condado informó que cobrará una «tarifa de reserva» de 30 dólares por el procesamiento inicial y la admisión a la cárcel, además delos 5 dólares por cada día de estadía.
La tarifa de reserva deberá volver a pagarse si el detenido cumple la condena y vuelve a caer en prisión.
Según remarcaron medios locales, la ley de Florida que permite a los condados facturar a los prisioneros por su tiempo en la cárcel requiere que se tenga en cuenta el «estado financiero» del recluso, «con el fin de que pague con sus ingresos y activos la totalidad o una parte justa de sus costos diarios de subsistencia».
Entre la población carcelaria hay personas indigentes que no podrán hacer frente a la imposición monetaria, así como internos que cuentan con fuentes de ingresos como pagos por discapacidad, que las autoridades no pueden tocar porque están exentos según la ley federal o estatal, reportó RT.
Flowers estima que la tasa real de recolección puede ser de alrededor del 35 %, según la experiencia de otros condados.
