En el mundo hay 132 nodos de cables submarinos. Son los encargados de proveer de internet al planeta. Las Toninas es un pequeño pueblo del extenso Partido de La Costa, el aglomerado balneario atlántico más cercano a Buenos Aires.

Las empresas que realizan estas instalaciones no fueron cautivadas por esto sino por las condiciones naturales de sus costas: las vieron aptas para bajar a tierra una serie de cables del tamaño de un vello, que transmiten información en forma de luz a lo largo de 20 mil kilómetros de extensión submarina. Y que reparten internet a una importante porción del mapa: Las Toninas es el único nodo argentino y uno de los pocos del Atlántico Sur.
Las cables, cuatro en total, fueron colocados en 2000. Aseguran que se rompen poco y no por fallas de origen sino por culpa del gran enemigo de los tendidos: los barcos pesqueros. De todos modos existe un sistema antiriesgo que puentea la transmisión mientras se arregla el tramo averiado.
La historia cambia cuando los cables avanzan más allá de las cajas negras y penetran en el continente. Qué ironía: la bella fábula submarina se hunde cuando toca la tierra. Allí, los cables se pierden en un pasamanos de empresas, leyes y negocios. Y comienzan los problemas conocidos. Será por eso que a ningún toninense le interesa tanto esta historia.
